1. What is Raw Hair?
The hair is called raw when it meets 3 conditions: it is human hair, unprocessed, and is collected from a single head (one donor). The hair is cut directly from the donor and wrapped immediately into a bundle to keep the hair’s inherent characteristics intact.
2. Methods of Testing Raw Hair
2.1. Cuticle Intact Checking
The natural structure of human hair has a cuticle layer on the outermost layer to protect the hair. If the hair does not have this cuticle layer, it will be very weak, dry, and brittle. Therefore, one of the important steps when testing raw hair is to check whether the hair still has this cuticle layer or not.
– Purpose: to check if this is human hair, and evaluate the quality of the hair
– Process: Use a razor or scissors to gently scrape the hair.
– Evaluation criteria:
- If you scrape off a white residue, it’s raw hair
- If you scrape off a brown residue, it’s not raw hair
- If you can’t scrape off anything, it’s most likely plastic/silicone hair
2.2. Wash Test/Shampoo Test
– Purpose: Check if the hair has been dyed/chemically treated
– Process: First, prepare a basin of warm water and put the hair bundle in, make sure the hair is completely wet. Next, add any shampoo you like and stroke the hair from top to bottom, repeat many times until there is a lot of foam. Soak the hair for about 5-10 minutes. Then, take the hair out and observe the basin of water.
– Evaluation criteria:
- If the water is still clear and has white studs, congratulations, it is raw hair, still retains its original natural color, and has not been treated with any chemicals
- If the water is dark brown, or yellow, and has pink studs. It is dyed or chemically treated hair
2.3. Burning Test
– Purpose: Check for any synthetic hair mixing
– Process: Take a random portion of the hair bundle (make sure you don’t take too little), burn it, and watch the burning process.
– Evaluation criteria:
- If the hair burns quickly, leaves ash easily, and smells like burning paper, it is human hair.
- If the hair is dripping and smells like burning nylon/plastic, it contains plastic or silicone fibers.
2.4. Bleach Test
– Purpose: Check the hair quality and whether there are any fillers
– Process: Use a developer to bleach your hair for 45-60 minutes. Check the color for changes every 30 minutes.
– Evaluation criteria:
- If your hair reaches 613 colors, congratulations, you have purchased good quality hair. Because only the finest raw hair can bleach to this color.
- If you find that your hair is still dark, it means that there is a synthetic fiber
Conclusion
Understanding the definition and how to test raw hair can help you avoid being fooled by poor-quality suppliers. Be clear about the quality of hair you want and go through all the testing steps. Reputable hair suppliers will not make it difficult or uncomfortable for you to ask for a hair quality test. Finally, if the hair passes all the tests along with the process of bleaching, washing, conditioning, and drying and still retains its softness and smoothness, it is a high-quality hair set.
